Historic Sites:

The Kansas City/Independence area served as the gateway to the American West for the 30 years when Missouri was the western-most state. Its strategic location on the Missouri River at the mouth of the Kansas River witnessed a procession of Native American groups, French fur trappers, the explorers Lewis and Clark, Daniel Boone, and later served as the starting point for major routes to Mexico (the Santa Fe Trail), Oregon (the Oregon Trail), and the California gold fields.
