For over 50 years, the Section of the Americas and the Europe and Middle East Section have hosted the Quaker Youth Pilgrimage, a travel experience for up to 28 youth (historically, ages 16 to 18). The “Quaker Youth Pilgrimage experience” has enhanced the development of international Quaker leadership through a journey of heart, mind and soul, in community with other young Quakers from a variety of theological, geographical and cultural backgrounds. They encounter the wide spectrum of Quaker faith and practices around the world, explore their common heritage, and witness to the complexity of the worldwide body of Friends. In 2011-2014 the Section of the Americas re-focused QYP efforts in the Section of the Americas, in order to encourage full involvement and participation of Latin American and Caribbean members.
FWCC is in the process of discerning how the Quaker Youth experience is growing and changing in our time. In order to address the needs of young Friends throughout the Americas for spiritual leadership development, in conjunction with the other three Sections of the Friends World Committee for Consultation, we are creating the Spiritual Leadership Development for Young Friends Discernment Working Group.
At this time, we are specifically asking what do young Friends need in the 21st century and what can FWCC provide within our resources. This working group will consider both questions and report to the Section of the Americas Executive Committee with recommendations for the future structure of a global Quaker Youth Pilgrimage program.
At this time, there are no plans for a Quaker Youth Pilgrimage program in 2016 or 2017. Check back to this page for more information about the new Working Group and how the Pilgrimage will be shaped - and shape others - in coming years.
2014 Latin American Pilgrimage
The 2014 Quaker Youth Pilgrimage "Cradles of Andean Quakerism" will take place in Bolivia and Peru from July 22 to August 21, 2014. In 2010 The National Friends Evangelical Churches (INELA) of Peru and Bolivia invited QYP to journey south. Both the Program Group and the Executive Committee of FWCC are enthusiastic about this first-ever pilgrimage to South America. The Quaker Youth Pilgrimage has been active for over 50 years and is known to be a life transforming and Quaker leadership developing experience.
Friends Committee on Scouting is an affiliated program of FWCC. It serves to encourage and promote the faith, history and testimonies of Friends through religious education programs for members of the Scout and Girl Scout/Guide movements as well as for members of Camp Fire USA. Friends Committee on Scouting also represents the Religious Society of Friends to various national and internatinal Scout and Girl Scout/Guide organizations and provides networking opportunities for Quaker members of Scouting and Girl Scouting/Guiding.
