Part Two: Announcing the 2018 Traveling Ministry Corps

The 2018 Corps is now complete! We are happy to share the news that Greg Woods (Illinois Yearly Meeting), Bill and Marty Smith (Philadelphia Yearly Meeting), and Geeta Jyothi McGahey (Southern Appalachia Yearly Meeting & Association) will serve as the English-speaking cohort of the Traveling Ministry Corps starting in 2018. Bill, Marty, Greg and Geeta will meet with the 2017 cohort at Pendle Hill for training and discernment before starting their service.
Hold the date for an evening presentation by our 2017 and 2018 ministers on February 24, 2018, live at the Pendle Hill Conference Center near Philadelphia, and livestreamed on the internet. More details will be available soon!

For more information and brief bios of each Minister, visit our Traveling Ministry Corps page below. Please join us in welcoming our four new ministers. If your meeting or church is interested in hosting one of our growing Corps, please use the form on the TMC page.

We would like to thank the the D’Olier Foundation, the Tyson Memorial Fund, and the Thomas H. and Mary Williams Shoemaker Fund for generous grants to support this program in the coming year.

Sustaining FWCC

In 2017 we encouraged more Friends to sign up to be a Sustainer with an automatic monthly or quarterly recurring gift. Over the course of the year, we nearly doubled the number of Sustainers, with 26 new pledges and 4 Friends who increased their existing pledges. If you would like to sign up, it’s not too late! Click here to read about the advantages of monthly giving – reduce the number of appeals you get AND increase your support for FWCC – and sign up online!

Travel in the Ministry Funding Opportunity

The Friends World Committee for Consultation Section of the Americas offers financial assistance for Friends to follow leadings to travel in the ministry in ways that bridge yearly meeting boundaries, theological differences, varieties of worship style, and differences in language and culture.
Applications are invited from members of meetings of the Religious Society of Friends in the Section of the Americas, and funds pay the actual costs of travel only. These funds have been made available by the Susan Bax Fund and the Chase Granting Group of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.

Report from Northwest Regional Coordinator

by Julie Peyton (Northwest Yearly Meeting)

Representatives from Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho will be gathering in Seattle, WA, on Thursday, January 11th, to plan their regional gathering, scheduled for 19-20 October 2018. We had already decided, at a similar meeting in January of 2017 when we set the 2018 date, that the location of the Regional Gathering will be in Seattle. At least 12 Friends will meet for about 6 hours, sharing a potluck lunch in the middle, to discern the theme and the possible keynote speaker(s). Representatives will be joined by a number of Friends who are not currently serving FWCC as reps from their Yearly Meetings, but who love the work of FWCC and want to help plan the Regional Gathering.
Our tradition here in the Pacific NW has the hosting Friends (Seattle area this time) plan the logistics (locations, meals, homestays, local transportation), while the other major-city Friends (from the Greater Portland Area) will be planning the program.
In other news, we are expecting a visit this March from Debbie Humphreys (Traveling Ministry Corps), who will travel among Friends in western Washington and western Oregon. The Pacific Northwest Women’s Theology Conference, a biennial gathering of women mostly from North Pacific and Northwest (NPYM and NWYM) will be held near Portland, Oregon, in early June.
And finally, there is curiosity and hope around the formation of Sierra-Cascades Yearly Meeting of Friends (SCYMF), and what involvement we can expect from them as they organize. I don’t know if Northwest Yearly Meeting (NWYM) will choose to stay affiliated with FWCC, yet there are Friends staying with NWYM who love the work of FWCC and will likely continue to be engaged as individuals no matter what NWYM discerns.
