December 2017 E-News: Welcoming 2018

December 2017
We thank God for the blessings in our lives
GrayDear Robin,

This time of year, those of us in North America are officially reminded to give thanks to God for the blessings in our lives. More and more, we are aware that the history of the last 500 years is complicated, up to and including today.
In recent months, I have had the opportunity to visit with Friends in Florida, Texas and Cuba who have all been affected by major hurricanes. During a recent conference call, we began by each saying who we were most directly worried about – family, friends, or people we were only hearing about on the news. However, I am still grateful for the fruits of this year’s harvests, for the love of family, and the incredibly rich encounters of Friends in the Americas.
The work of the Section of the Americas continues to engage us all, even as we face challenges in our personal lives and our communities. The steps we are taking to build the Traveling Ministry Corps and staff our committees and working groups help us focus on the things that are important to us and the ways that people come together to create something larger around them.
As we welcome a new year, we remember to honor all that happened in 2017 – the highlights as well as the challenges. And we thank you for your continued support!
In friendship,

Announcing 2018 Traveling Ministry Corps

(by Cristela Martinez)

We are pleased to announce the Spanish-speaking group of the 2018 Traveling Ministry Corps!
The Traveling Ministry Corps has named five new members from Central and South America, and they are preparing to serve your meeting or church. In January, the new cohort will meet in the City of Coroico, Bolivia for training.
Clockwise from top left: Beatriz Apaza, Jonatan Mamani, Yulieed, Elvis Ivan Calderon Morales, Oscar Eduardo Rodriguez Merino and Maria Virginia Jalire Pisque. Read more about each one here.
Get to know each of them, and invite them to share with your Yearly or Monthly meeting. Remember that it does not have to be a large event but a time to share fellowship and the word of God. And stay tuned for more information on the 2018 English-speaking Corps!

Weave a Legacy with a Bequest

Have you considered including the Friends World Committee in your will? Your gift to FWCC changes lives by nurturing connections and understanding among Friends across the Americas. A donation through your will or trust may reduce your taxes while supporting the important work of FWCC for the future.
A bequest is a gift made through your will, and is one of the easiest ways to make a difference to an organization you care about. You may include a bequest to FWCC when you have a new will prepared, or add a codicil to your existing will. Find examples of bequests, and sample bequest language for including FWCC in your estate here.

There are various ways to include FWCC in your estate plan, whether as a percentage or a residual of your estate. Find out more in the link to our website below.

Nominating Committee and Representative Engagement Group Meet in Houston, TX

The FWCC Section of the Americas Nominating Committee joined with
our Representative Engagement Group in Houston, TX this November. This is the se
cond year that these groups have met to conduct their work.
As you can imagine, the process of Nominating representatives to all of our committees, program and resource groups, and finding Friends to serve as clerks, is a big job! It is impossible for one small group to know all the skills, gifts, and leadings of Quakers all across our Section.

This is where the Rep Engagement group comes in. This group is responsible for welcoming new reps to FWCC and helping them stay engaged in our work. Each Regional Coordinator reaches out to the representatives in their area to get a better idea of how they’d like to contribute their time and energies to the various aspects of the Section’s work, from Convocations to Finance to Nominating and beyond!

We send our sincere thanks to Live Oak Meeting and other Houston area Friends, meetings and churches that hosted these groups. The meetings were fruitful and we are excited to share the proposed nomination report in March.
